TERMS OF REFERENCE

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. It also endeavours to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles. Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the origin of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

The ICRC Delegation in Azerbaijan is seeking a candidate, male or female, for the position of:
 
Intern (Department of Implementation and Promotion of Law (IPL)

Minimum required knowledge & experience:

• Students with a background in law, international law, political science, international relations, regional studies and/or related subjects within one year of graduation from a university or other accredited institution of higher education at the graduate or postgraduate level, as well as graduates or postgraduates within two years following completion of their degree, are eligible to apply;
• Professional fluency in English and Azerbaijani with excellent communication skills; knowledge of Russian is an asset;
• An inquisitive mind, good analytical, research and organizational skills; ability to pay attention to detail;
• Previous experience of similar internships within international organizations would be an asset;
• Ability to work independently, to establish and maintain effective working relations in a small team;
• Very good computer literacy.

Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision of the Legal Advisor/IPL Responsible the intern will perform the following assignments and duties:

• Analyze the relevant national legislation and produce a research paper on a topic of interest for the ICRC delegation
• Complete an update of the ICRC international humanitarian law database on Azerbaijan;
• Facilitate organization of the IPL department’s events (trainings, conferences, etc.);
• Translate small ICRC law publications into Azerbaijani;
• Keep IPL department’s legal library up-to-date;
• Participate in working meetings (external / internal) as assigned by the supervisor;
• Draft correspondence, minutes of meetings and reports, as necessary;
• Execute administrative and office work related to the project (no more than 30% of time)
• Perform other assignments as agreed with the supervisor (no more than 5% of time).
This is a non-paid internship, however the ICRC will offer a small allowance to cover daily commuting expenses. In case if official travel is necessary for the performance of tasks, the ICRC will reimburse such travel expenses according to its official procedures.

The internship is expected to last 3 months (with some possibility for the extension). The working hours will be agreed with the successful candidate. There is a possibility for part-time engagement for students who are enrolled in university.

Upon completion of the internship, subject to satisfactory performance, a certificate will be issued. Undertaking an internship with the ICRC shall under no circumstances be considered as a commitment to future employment with the ICRC.
