A. Programme Description
The programme “Sustainable management of biodiversity in the Southern Caucasus” is a German/Azerbaijanian technical cooperation programme implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbei (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Government.
The biological and agricultural variety of our habitats is a vital basis of life and livelihood for all. That is why we conserve and protect it. The Southern Caucasus is one of only two regions located in Europe of internationally acknowledged exceptional biodiversity. However, over-use of the forests, overgrazing of pasture land and poaching jeopardise the richness of the biodiversity, and impair the bases of subsistence and income of the rural population in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.
With this regional programme we are contributing to reforming selected legal frameworks, to strengthening the capacities of the Ministries of the Environment, to human resources development within and outside the Ministries of the Environment, and to communicating matters of importance concerning the environment. On a local level, we create conditions and structures for sustainable management of the biodiversity in commercial forests and in protected areas.
The programme’s second phase (Oct 2011 – Sep 2015) will comprise 4 different components:
Component 1: Support of the revision of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP)
