Typical work activities

Mechanical engineer works on a project from the initial brief, through the design and development
stage, to the testing of one or more prototypes, right through to final manufacture and implementation.

Tasks will generally include:

• Follow up a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering
disciplines;
• developing, testing and evaluating theoretical designs;
• discussing and solving complex problems with manufacturing departments, sub‐contractors,
suppliers and customers;
• managing projects using engineering principles and techniques;
• producing details of specifications and outline designs;
• recommending modifications following prototype test results;
• considering the implications of issues such as cost, safety and time constraints;
• working with other professionals,
• Monitoring and commissioning plant and systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer‐generated
reports.
• Confer with engineers and other personnel to implement operating procedures, resolve system
malfunctions, and provide technical information.
• Research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to
evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications.
• Specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure conformance with
engineering design and performance specifications.
• Install, operate, and maintain mechanical products, equipment, systems and processes to meet
requirements, applying knowledge of engineering principles.
• Investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations to maintenance crew.
