The British Embassy Baku is seeking applications for the position of Political and Project Officer.

Main duties and responsibilities

As the Embassy’s Political and Project Officer, your duties will include researching and reporting on a variety of political issues, building a network of contacts across Government, think tanks, academia, business and civil society in order to engage and lobby on behalf of the UK. You will be based within the political section and will work closely with the Head of Section and regional colleagues in Tbilisi and Yerevan. Your political work will be particularly focused on the following areas;

• Religious and ethnic minorities
• Nagorno Karabagh including conflict issues and IDPs
• Azerbaijan’s regional relations

Over time we will expect you to become the Embassy’s resident expert on these areas. You can also expect to cover a wide range of other topics depending upon the Embassy’s priorities – such as human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

You will also be responsible for delivering the Embassies project work: bilateral and conflict prevention programmes (in coordination with our embassies in Tbilisi and Yerevan). You will administer funds, monitor and evaluate projects, and report to stakeholders. Expect this to account for at least 50% of your work.

As necessary, you will lead on planning, organising and hosting visiting delegations from the UK and regional visits by senior Embassy staff. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to organising public diplomacy events at the Embassy.

Skills and experience of the preferred candidate

• A university degree ( preferably Law/International Law, International Relations, Political sciences or Human Rights)
• Good influencing and public presentation skills.
• Demonstrable knowledge of the Azerbaijani political system and society, and a good awareness of the UK.
• Excellent organisational skills and an ability to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines.
• A customer-focused approach and a positive attitude.
• An ability to learn quickly and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
• An ability to work independently and to take the initiative as well as being able to work well with others.
• Excellent IT skills (Word, Outlook, Powerpoint and Excel).
• Prepared to travel overseas for work/training purposes when required.
• Previous experience of similar work is desirable.

Language Requirements

A native Azerbaijani speaker with excellent written and verbal English skills. Strong Russian would also be an asset.

Salary and employment

Embassy working hours are 0900 to 1700, Monday to Friday. Monthly gross salary for this position is AZN 1,348.15 payable in arrears. Depending on previous work experience and relevant qualifications there may be scope for some negotiation regarding the level of the starting salary. The successful applicant will receive a comprehensive medical insurance package and excellent training opportunities.
