Corrosion Technician

Purpose / Role

Corrosion Technician is expected to be responsible for all facets of field executed corrosion duties, as well as assisting in the pre-construction design processes to mitigate foreseen corrosion problem areas, and maintain all corrosion control records.

Responsibilities and duties:

• Perform field testing of new and old cathodic protection systems and other corrosion control systems on underground and submerged metallic structures;
• Perform troubleshooting tests and identify when such testing is required;
• Make field decisions without direct supervision and be responsible for obtaining field data to determine condition of structures under evaluation;
• Review field test results with client. Compile and submit draft reports for senior staff review;
• Identify and monitor the factors that cause internal corrosion;
• Perform maintenance and repair of rectifiers and maintains cathodic protection station;
• Perform stray current interference tests and monitor interference point;
• Conduct and interpret ground bed design surveys, line surveys, gas leakage surveys, surface potential and pipe to soil surveys;
• Maintain external and internal corrosion control;
• Operate corrosion softwares;
• Conduct measures to recognize and protect field gathering and process facilities from electrolytic and biological corrosion;
• Locate new cathodic protection installations by testing soil resistivity;
• Measure efficiency of installed units by testing protected pipelines;
• Monitor internal corrosion and inhibitor feed rates; clean, weigh and calculate corrosion rates from coupons;
• Maintain thermoelectric generators and install cathodic equipment;
• Develop and implement corrosion control plan in accordance with collected survey data;
• Test, adjust, maintain, and repair existing cathodic protection equipment and testing facilities;
• Maintain all Corrosion control records;
• Assist in the design and installation of new cathodic protection equipment and facilities;
• Monitor corrosion protection activities for adherence to design specifications;
• Conduct post-installation surveys, complete interference testing and energize rectifier systems;
• Organize and analyze gathered data, prepare charts and tables;
• Perform tests required to determine condition of soil, water, underground or submerged structures;
• Conduct various field tests to gather data for evaluation purposes;
• Assemble field data for preparation of final client report including service recommendations;
• Diagnose and recommend remedies for system difficulties observed during resurvey operations;
• Assist senior staff in the preparation of survey and design reports and final job reports;
• Assist senior staff in analyzing requirements and the design of appropriate corrosion control measures;
• Provide maintenance of field test equipment, ensure good operation condition and render minor repairs;
• Recommend modifications to senior staff for approval;

Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Science degree with a concentration in Electrical, Chemical, Materials Engineering or other related field required;
• Minimum 8 years’ experience refining industry experience with at least 5 years’ experience supporting inspection or corrosion engineering activities;
• Experience working as primary field engineer for at least one major complex turnaround is preferred;
• NACE CP level 2 is required;
• Possess competent knowledge of all aspects of corrosion control, its mechanisms, and mitigation;
• Able to proficiently utilize corrosion control equipment including but not limited to, Multi- meter, reference electrodes, current interrupter, pipe locator, data logger, soil resistivity box, and pipe line current mapper;
• Adept at conducting detailed analysis of corrosion data and capable of resolving complex issues with minimal assistance;
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English;

Job type: full-time

• Must be capable of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs (23 kg);
• Must be capable of vigorous outdoor activities and have manual dexterity with physical ability to work extended hours, climbing, bending, kneeling, squatting, working with arms extended above the head, twisting upper body, standing for long periods, walking on catwalks, working in confined spaces, exposure to extreme weather conditions, driving a vehicle, operation of forklifts and light industrial equipment;
