Laboratory Specialist (Gas Chromatography - GC)

The GC Specialist has the following accountabilities:

  • Testing and supervising when required all analyses conducted for hydrocarbon fluids (which can be toxic) section for all type of products at GC section. Ensures the accuracy and reliability of all samples from sample collection till reporting to customers. 
  • Verify and approves test results in worksheets and LIMS. Ensure that all records are maintained in both hard and electronic copies and that all documentation is completely accurately. 
  • Contributes preparing reports to customers and shares them with Lab Supervisor.
  • Maintain workloads, provides on the job training for GC section staff as required to facilitate the completion of assigned tasks in a safe work environment consistent with test requirements and personnel capabilities.
  • Ensures turnaround times and early on time service delivery quality to the customers in alignment with Lab Supervisor.
  • Contributes Lab supervisor for weekly safety toolbox meetings & Walk and Talk sessions to improve analytical and safety awareness of the staff and properly keep records on that.
  • Manages all laboratory tests results for the team and distribute and verify all sample reports within the sections. 
  • Develop and coordinate draft procedures, work instructions, programs, protocols or any specific activities, reports dedicated to GC section and coordinated correct implementations.
  • Manages good housekeeping for the relevant laboratory sections and areas including chemical waste management, HSE issues and utility services provision.
  • Participate and coordinate the design of the ISO 17025 by acquiring, implementing, and continuously improving good laboratory practice, developing required documentation and controlling its implementation in day-to-day operations carries out in laboratory and in the fields.
  • Contributes internal/external audits of the laboratory and direct responsible for the readiness of GC section for the internal/external audits.
  • Responsible for handover process and good communication if any of the section personnel goes on vacation or be in leave for any reasons. 
  • Monitors the inventory, the stock balance, and verifies correct registering of the consumption and/or receipt, & any reallocation of material in different storage locations of the items (e.g. chemicals, spares, consumables, glassware, standard mixtures) for the GC sections and keeps consistent records on these. 
  • Ensures implementation of international standards, specifications and procedures for all analytical tests carried out in company.
  • Reports and escalates on Out of Specification results directly to Laboratory Supervisor. (SQC, CRM. PT)
  • Carries out all the maintenance, calibration, verification activities within GC section and prepares annual plans together with Lab Supervisor and ensures implementation of it.
  • Maintains effective day-to-day communication with and QA/QC Specialist for all routine and non-routine samples for gas sections.
  • Follow the company HSE procedures and instructions, verifying and in case helping assigned laboratory employees to adhere of all.
  • Ensures all samples delivered are properly labeled and chemicals are segregated and labelled in terms of unique GHS labelling system consistent for all samples and chemicals.
  • Verifies that assigned laboratory personnel has read and understood all company documents such as standard operating procedures, work instructions, quality procedures, analytical equipment operating manuals and ect. He/She becomes the guidance for lab technicians when circumstances require.
  • Ensures LIMS is used efficiently as per sample flow, test methods and reporting requirements. Manages efficient monitoring the lab workload for identifying manpower and overall lab trends to report on monthly basis for the section to lab supervisor.
  • Generates laboratory work instructions. SOP’s, procedures, logbooks developed for GC section.
  • Contributes planing for validation and uncertainty calculations together with QA/QC Specialist and Lab Supervisor. Participates in validation and uncertainty calculation for the GC section and monitors the performance of the staff and the quality of the work done. 
  • Remains as the main responsible for the test results for the GC section which includes PT samples within the annual round robin scheme. Make sure all required participation is assured for the required PT tests and take necessary action to complete the analysis and root cause identification/corrective actions afterwards for further improvement.
  • Remains responsible for the items and delegations described in Table of Authority in Quality Manual.
  • Remains committed to annual company objectives and individual goals and targets.

Qualification & Experience Requirements:

  • University degree in Chemistry.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Chemical Laboratory environment preferably related to Oil and Gas Industries with proven GC experience. 
  • Experience in quality control techniques of the GC lab. (GLP, ISO 9001, ISO 17025, ect) 
  • Experience in operating, calibrating, and maintaining state of art of various laboratory equipment referred to GC section. 
  • Experience or qualification to operate in presence of toxic substances specifically H2S. 
  • Proven experience for mainly complex gas and liquid chromatography solutions for gas, crude oil and oil products (DHA, SimDis, RGA, NGA, Trace Sulphur, Reformulyzer). 
  • Knowledge on gas sampling systems – closed sampling philosophy. 
  • Awareness of the statistical tools used in the evaluation of QA/QC parameters such as uncertainty evaluation, method validation, proficiency tests results evaluation
  • Awareness of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) 
  • Good organization and team working skills.
