Role synopsis

Graduate engineers in the pipeline discipline need a good understanding of a broad range of engineering principles since the role covers a wide variety of areas, such as: quantification of forces and moments on pipelines and their response in terms of stress and strain, assessment of hydraulic flow through pipelines; soil mechanics and its influence on pipeline behavior; corrosion threats, pipeline materials selection and corrosion control; selection and specification of inspection techniques and the assessment of pipeline integrity using inspection results. Your first role in BP will depend on business need, however, graduate pipeline engineers are typically responsible for providing engineering support to ongoing operations or new projects.

This could comprise a wide range of activities, including: assessing pipeline integrity, reviewing options for improving operational efficiency, performing or reviewing design studies, implementing changes to pipeline systems and managing the delivery of work by contractors.

Key accountabilities - Challengers typically spend 18-24 months in each of two hands-on roles that are carefully selected to give them enough experience to graduate from the Challenge programme within a 4-year period.

- Challenger engineers normally work as members of an engineering team, and will always have the guidance of more experienced engineers in their discipline who monitor their technical development.

- Precise accountabilities will depend on the exact job you are offered.

- Challenge engineers will be expected to deliver increasingly complex work once they show what they are capable of doing and as their knowledge and experience grow. Even from day one, they are expected to contribute to the performance challenges of their team.

- During Challenge you would be expected to work with a wide range of disciplines within engineering, operations and HSE.

- You will be expected to spend a significant amount of time on operational sites to gain an understanding of pipelines and pipeline related equipment and how it is operated, inspected and maintained.

- You will be expected to build up a working knowledge of international pipeline related codes and standards as well as developing a deep understanding of BP’s Engineering Technical Practices (ETP).

Essential Education

- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Pipeline, Civil and Structural or Mechanical Engineering discipline obtained over last 4 years

Essential experience and job requirements

-Work experience is not essential; however it may be an advantage.
- Work or academic project experience relating to inspection, modification, assessment and integrity management, design, procurement and construction of either onshore and offshore pipelines would be helpful.

Desirable criteria & qualifications

- The ability to communicate in English orally and in writing.
- Organizational, planning, and prioritizing abilities.
- Must be a motivated self-starter, able to communicate with all levels of management, engineers of many disciplines as well as field operations staff.
- Strong team player with the ability to stand alone in challenging situations.
