Main duties and responsibilities:

The EAL Teacher is responsible for:

Teaching and Learning:

  • To work under the direction of the school’s EAL Leader for Learning to provide EAL support to identified groups of lower secondary children
  • To assess each learner’s needs and plan appropriate lessons, in collaboration with the class teacher and other support staff, to secure effective progress
  • To liaise with class teachers to ensure maximization of cross-curricular links wherever possible, to ensure continuity of learning
  • To provide additional support materials or adapt existing materials to suit the needs of EAL children that will maximize learning opportunities in the classroom.
  • To provide class teachers with specialist support, resources, and advice as necessary
  • To design lessons using up-to-date techniques commensurate with current best practices to ensure the delivery of a high-quality language program.
  • To maintain high standards of teaching to ensure high-quality provision at all times.
  • To create a safe and stimulating learning environment that encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
  • To contribute teacher-made resources to the school’s EAL resource bank
  • To keep up to date with the latest training and strategies for EAL primary provision
  • To set an example of excellence through exemplary classroom practice and personal professional conduct.

Other duties and responsibilities:

  • To attend all parent-teacher consultation evenings as directed by the Principal
  • To maintain effective communication with parents
  • To attend and support a parents’ information sessions 
  • To provide parents with information on how to support their child at home
  • To be a good role model for promoting international-mindedness and cultural understanding within the community
  • To contribute ideas/articles to the school newsletter, Class Page or Parent Portal as required  
  • To conduct admissions language assessments, as directed by the EAL Leader for Learning
  • To provide prompt feedback to the EAL Leader for Learning and class teachers about the language abilities of new admissions
  • To provide brief oral feedback to the parents after the admissions assessments
  • To submit admissions data promptly to the EAL Leader for Learning
  • To be fully committed to and supportive of, the school ethos 
  • To undertake playground/break time duties as directed by the Deputy Head Teacher
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested by the Principal

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

  • A high level of intra- and inter-personal intelligence 
  • Background in second language learning approaches and techniques
  • Experience working collaboratively with academic subject-area teachers 
  • Fluent Azerbaijani and English language skills; both verbal and written essential with an appropriate qualification (C1)
  • Prior successful experience working in a school setting is strongly preferred. 

Interpersonal Skills: 

  • Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Focuses on solving conflict positively; listens to others without interrupting; keeps emotions under control; contributes to building a positive team spirit. 
  • Refrains from negative talk and gossip. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully work with small children and the public. 
  • Understands confidentiality.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.

Computer Skills: 

  • General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, internet software, e-mail, and word processing software. 
  • Ability to proficiently use the following programs strongly preferred: MS Word and Excel. 
  • Ability to type accurately and proficiently in both English and Azerbaijani.
