Job Description: Shelter Operations Manager

REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

POSITION PERSPECTIVE:

Full time position -Responsible for the management of Animal Shelter with a focus on animal care including the housing, feeding, medical needs, safety and adoptions of all animals. Position requires fundamental business skills such as personnel (hiring, firing, managing both staff & volunteers), financial planning (cost containment & revenue generation), execution and creation of policy and procedures. Knowledge of animal care and the animal welfare industry important. Must have good communication and computer skills.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

1.The health, safety, and care of all animals at the shelter to include, housing, feeding, medical administration, and safety of each animal and the people in contact with them.

1. Focus on adoption increases to include a timely and appropriate placement of animals and a reduction in average length of stay and adoption returns.

2. Development and execution of an animal behavioral testing program that identifies safety concerns and solutions.

3. Develop an annual shelter budget with a focus on cost containment to include vet costs, personnel costs, and building expenses.

4. Assist the Executive Director in establishing and maintaining animal shelter policies, procedures and relationships with government officials with respect to animal control.

5. Administer all personnel policies related to the animal shelter to include hiring, firing, supervision and scheduling of both staff and volunteers. Provide good leadership and execute the code of conduct in a manner that encourages respectful relationships. Motivate a team to accomplish our mission and goals.

6. Recruit, train, and motivate quality volunteers.

7. Develop and establish a customer service program that helps staff and volunteers provide quality service and a good public image to our customers and community.

8. Supervise the maintenance of the building with a focus on prevention of building problems, the safety of both people and a clean and efficient environment that meets the established standards of the inside building and the outside grounds.

9. Establish systems of efficiency for animal care and administration. Create programs to encourage healthier, happier animals which in turn our more adoptable.
10. Develop and execute a fund raising strategy for the shelter.

MEASUREMENT

1. Increase adoptions to agreed upon goals.

2. Reduction of adoption returns to agreed upon goals.

3. Decrease the average length of stay for animals prior to adoptions

4. Reduction of expenses to agreed upon goals.

5. Completion of designated projections in a timely manner.

6. Good leadership skills that produce a quality & efficient team of staff & volunteers.
7.  Increase public donations through fund raising activities.
8. Operate shelter to allocated budget

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Certificate and/or bachelor's degreesin such disciplines as animal shelter management, pet sciences and humane leadership

2. Business-related coursework, such as marketing, accounting, human resources, computer applications and management skills.

3. Good communication & computer skills

Knowledge and Skills:

1. Must have 3-5 years experience in animal welfare industry.
2. Able to work well under pressure.
3. Organized and keeps complete and accurate records.
4. Committed to the mission of the Shelter
