Job Description for Laboratory Trainer

This posting is related to the Collaborative Biological Engagement Program (CBEP) that is being administered in cooperation between the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Government of Azerbaijan (GoAJ). The successful candidate for the position of Laboratory Trainer will conduct training in laboratory skills, techniques and biosafety procedures for scientists, laboratory personnel and future GoAJ laboratory trainers in the diagnosis of Especially Dangerous Pathogens (EDPs) using training materials approved by DTRA and GoAJ. Examples of EDPs are brucellosis, anthrax, Foot-and-Mouth disease, tularemia, plague, etc.

Responsibilities

• Train and mentor Ministry of Health (MoH)-and State Veterinary Service (SVS)-selected laboratory workers and future GoAJ trainers in the development and implementation of laboratory and biosafety training for EDPs.
• Revise, adapt, and assist in the translation of existing CBEP training curricula, as well as develop new training materials as needed,to fulfill program and GoAJ requirements, including formatting, version control, and translation quality assurance.  Additionally, undertake regular updates to support a sustainable and country-appropriate Training Program. 
• Assist with the development of legal guidelines and documentation that supports sustainment of CBEP training in Azerbaijan.
• Support the integration of CBEP techniques and normalization of activities at engaged facilities through on-the-job training, mentoring, troubleshooting, and the facilitation of communications, as needed.
• Support the development and implementation of CBEP research projects that involve and train Azerbaijani laboratory personnel.
• Follow DTRA procedures for the approval, scheduling, and reporting of training activities.
• Maintain training records to facilitate entry into an electronic database to track training scheduling, student enrollment and progress.
• Produce and edit training reports and documents, as required
• Participate in teleconferences, meetings, reporting and management activities, as required

Background

• University degree in biological science.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a diagnostic or research laboratory utilizing PCR, ELISA, and/or bacteriological techniques.
• Familiarity with international biosafety practices and standards.
• Experience in delivering formalized instruction, such as through a university, technical school, NGO, government institution, or private training program strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in written and spoken English; fluency in Azerbaijani and, preferably, Russian.
• Good organizational and communications skills.
• Capable of efficiently performing duties using common computer software applications – MS Office, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Adobe Reader.
• Capable of understanding program goals and needs, adapting to rapidly-changing circumstances, working efficiently, making timely decisions, communicating clearly, and responding to oversight and managerial direction.
• Ability to travel within Azerbaijan for up to 2 weeks at a time.
