Role synopsis 

BP Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey Region invites applications from professionals to work as a Well Planning Geologist in the BP New Wells Delivery Team (NWD) in Baku. The role requires an experienced Geologist with a demonstrated track record of delivering detailed subsurface plans for the drilling of new wells, including all requisite front-end loading, risk analysis, trajectory evaluation, overburden description, target description, and writing of the geological documentation in the form of a Statement of Requirements (SoR). The role will involve substantial input and geological oversight of an active development drilling program on the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli and Shah Deniz Fields in the Caspian Sea. The successful candidate will help to deliver one rig line of activity within a 10 rig multi-year drilling program.

Key accountabilities 

As Well Planning Geologist, your main responsibilities will be as following, but not limited to:

• Ensure that the planning and execution of wells meets BP standards and practices at all times by working with in an integrated manner with multiple disciplines in the Subsurface, Drilling, and Completion Teams.

• Describe subsurface pre-“No Drilling Surprises” (NDS) drilling risks during the planning phase of new wells, and develop risk reduction plans in association with other disciplines

• Develop comprehensive well evaluation / data acquisition plans to support the Subsurface team’s objectives to appraise the subsurface uncertainties, risks, and mitigations necessary to underpin successful development schemes; including documentation of value of data statements

• Deliver the Well SOR by completion of geological work, and integrating and compiling data and information from other disciplines.

• Provide quick summary of the key hole sections and operational support during well execution. Contribute to key decisions during planning, execution and completion of the well.

• Input into the Integrated Subsurface Description model, and update this post-well for new data and interpretations. • Complete Sub-surface end of well reports, including lessons learned and input into Non-Productive Time (NPT) and post - NDS analyses. Share learning and work with the Subsurface and Drilling teams to reduce NPT.

• Provide coaching and mentoring to more junior staff in relevant areas of expertise

Essential Education 

• Relevant Geoscience Degree

Essential experience and job requirements 

• Minimum 6 years of experience as a geologist working for an operating company in oil & gas field exploration and/or development

• Azerbaijani citizenship

• Basic knowledge of drilling, completion and reservoir management practices

Other Requirements (eg Travel, Location) 

• Excellent communication skills with proven success working with multidisciplinary teams

• Ability to work in a challenging environment and deliver to tight deadlines

• Proficiency in work related software packages. Good computer skills

• Strong level of English (written and verbal)

Desirable criteria & qualifications 

• Good oral and written communication skills

• Skilled in the application of relevant geological software: - Petrel, StratWorks, RMS, SeisWorks

• Experience working in western oil companies.

• Strong commitment to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), and proven track record in this area of operations.
